Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
2. In a medium bowl, toss the blackberries with 1/2 cup of sugar and lemon juice. Let them sit for about 10 minutes to release their natural juices.
3. In another bowl, whisk together flour, remaining 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon if using.
4. Add the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Stir just until combined to form a smooth batter.
5. Pour the batter into a greased 8×8-inch baking dish.
6. Spoon the blackberry mixture evenly over the batter — do not stir; the batter will rise up around the fruit as it bakes.
7. Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the fruit is bubbling around the edges.
8. Remove from the oven and let it cool for 10–15 minutes before serving.
9. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of cream for the ultimate treat.
